The other day in China a car thief, Mr Zhou, strangled a two-month-old baby which he found asleep in the car. He later handed himself over to police.

Chinese internet bloggers, twitterers, etc, have been registering outrage, calling for Zhou to be put to death. "Killing him once would not be enough," said one.

Yet the number of babies aborted in China per year is about 13 million. The doctors and parents and politicians making this possible and legal are not considered deserving of punishment.

Australia is much the same with emotive responses about violence against children while abortion is considered a "right".

The International Convention on the Rights of the Child, in force since September 1990, says that "the child, by reason of his physical and mental immaturity, needs special safeguards and care, including appropriate legal protection, before as well as after birth."

Before as well as after birth? Are not humans a hypocritical race?
