One Cross

One cross, of all crosses
Men have made
To punish others, stands for
All the rest
And whether those who suffered
Themselves were laid
Reverently in tombs
By those who loved them
(As their tears attest)
Or like criminals on gibbets left
For birds of the air
To savage at their will.
Still that one cross stands there,
Both in time and beyond it
On that hill ...
Now two millennia on,
One Life (in one small state
On the edge of an empire long since gone)
Haunts us with Its fate.
The geography of love
Encompasses every land,
Every Jordan has its dove,
And believers stand
Together, though they may,
To some, seem far apart,
Sharing to this very day
Their caring Saviour's heart.
