Reflection: A Christian response to bereavement: Jesus' ministry to the sick and dying - Fr Dennis Byrnes

I should like to respond to many of the points raised in Peter Howard's letter on the New Mass, but shall limit myself to just one. He writes that "few of the high-profile converts of the last 15 years have chosen the much-revered Tridentine Mass in preference to the New Mass."

The much-admired Gerry Matatics is one such convert who is an enthusiastic supporter of the Latin Mass. Perhaps many more would embrace the beautiful Latin Mas if it were not suppressed with mean-spirited restrictions in many dioceses.

Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger wrote in his book, Salt of the Earth: "I am of the opinion, to be sure, that the old rite should be granted much more generously to all who desire it. It's impossible to see what could be dangerous or unacceptable about that. A community is calling its very being into question when it suddenly declares that what until now was its holiest and highest possession is strictly forbidden and when it makes the longing for it seem downright indecent."
