Ex Maria Virgine

When has the might of man surpassed that She
Who worshipped on her meek adoring knee
And to the Second of the Awful Three
(In Manhood less, in Godhead Equal-One)
Whispered with shining eyes "It is my Son!"

* * *

Dread Majesty without After or Before
By Faith alone we knew it when we saw
The little One's pale face amid the straw
The Father's Word above all human guess
And God Himself no longer Motherless.

* * *

And shall He pity not who understands
The feel of kiss and gentle swaddling bands?
Kind Christ, have mercy by those loving hands
More powerful than the angels when Thy Head
Slept on her heart, and God was comforted.
