Reflection: A reason for mercy: healing post-abortion trauma - Anne R. Lastman

May I make a response to a letter in the April edition regarding the issue of inclusive language ("Mutilated hymns").

The reason hymns are sometimes modified "to remove any reference to God as masculine" is precisely because God is not masculine. A masculine God could not be infinite since there would be something lacking, something that God is not, that is, the feminine aspect. An infinite God, therefore, can be neither male nor female.

Theological accuracy is important, and we should strive to be as precise as we can be in our language about God. While we will always struggle with our human limitations, there is no excuse for sloppy theology and inaccurate terminology.
