Letters RefugeesJohn McLean, under the umbrella of the St Vincent de Paul Migrant and Refugee Committee, advocates an open door in Australia for Afghans seeking asylum status (December/ January AD2000). Since the Koran (Sura 3: verse 114) counsels Muslims against having friendly relations with us infidels, how could they be incorporated into the Australian community? "If a nation chooses to enact precautionary laws for the safeguarding of its own genius and qualities, it has the Church's approval as long as all is done without prejudice to duties which the common origin and destiny of the whole human race impose upon us" (Pope Pius XII, Summi Pontificatus, 1939).
