Women priests

Women priests

Kevin McManus

Readers may recall that during the pontificate of John Paul II, and following his infallible ruling on the impossibility of women priests, the heads of women's religious orders in Australia released a statement rejecting the Pope's ruling.

As far as I know, these leaders were never rebuked by the Australian bishops at the time, nor have they publicly retracted their rebellion.

I do not know for sure whether the Sisters of St Joseph (Black or Brown) were included in this act of disobedience.

If they were, now is the time for them to submit to Church teaching before their founder, Blessed Mary MacKillop, is canonised. Otherwise some might associate Australia's first saint with the rebellion of some of today's women religious.
