Strange 'bedfellows'

Strange 'bedfellows'

J. Loring

In a recent interview published in The Australian newspaper, Fr Peter Kennedy of St Mary's, South Brisbane, (like retired auxiliary bishop of Sydney, Geoffrey Robinson, before him), as reported, dubiously insists that Church 'tradition' has mandated that the local ordinary (diocesan bishop) be elected by the people rather than appointed by Rome.

How strange then, that in regard to such issues as that sex should be restricted to a man and a woman in marriage, and that only men have ever been ordained to the priesthood, these same and other like-minded persons tell us the Church needs to be dragged into the 21st century and change - and that 2,000 years of verifiable Church tradition should apparently and rather conveniently be ignored.
