Sonnet on the Election of Pope Benedict XVI

Sonnet on the Election of Pope Benedict XVI

for Joseph Ratzinger

With the vast ambiguous secular eye
of the world media focussed myopically on
your election, when were there ever
greater expectations everywhere
for a pontificate? Surely many a sigh
escaped you when the call came down
and the white smoke ascended. Never
was more zealous and divisive prayer
ever offered up; was there an ideologue
from the four corners of the globe who failed
to fondly wish their favourite got the nod?
(Rest, rest perturbed spirits! Let the fog
of incomprehension close around you who have nailed
your victimhood to the cross and called it 'God'.)
