Role of bishop (letter)

Arthur Negus

You report that Governor Davis of California has criticised Bishop Weigand of California for "telling the faithful how to practise their faith" (March AD2000). What does the Governor think a bishop is for?

Of course a bishop tells his flock what is of faith and how best to practise it. A bishop is an overseer (Greek, episkopos, overseer). Governor Davis is criticising the bishop for being a bishop! I'm sure the good citizens of California deserve better than that.
