I fully agree with Fr Peter Joseph (Letters, March AD2000). Why doesn't every parish introduce a program of assisting a priest from overseas to come to their parish and work, either by helping the parish priest or even becoming the parish priest? Our bishops could oversee the program.
The St Vincent de Paul Society has been successfully running a program called "assist a student", so why not an equivalent for overseas priests?
The future of the Catholic Church in Australia must depend - in the short-term at least - on the assistance of foreign clergy, even if they stay for limited periods on a rotating basis, as with the Neocatechumenate in Perth and Sydney.
