JESUS CHRIST, YESTERDAY, TODAY, FOREVER
by Fr Anthony Percy
(ConnorCourt, 2010, 80pp, $19.95. ISBN: 978-1-92142-124-2. Available from Freedom Publishing)
This short, dynamic and attractively produced book provides an ideal springboard for any people, young or old, to further their study of the person of Jesus Christ.
Father Percy takes St Mark's Gospel and, in a simple, clear, direct style and language explores the person of Jesus, as St Mark reveals Him.
Mark was the constant companion of St Peter on his missionary journey and Mark's Gospel reflects Peter's straight-from-the-shoulder style and theology, Peter's occupation as a fisherman being not conducive to abstruse theological meanderings; nor indeed is Father Percy's youthful personality.
The book has a clear focus and a contemporary context, namely the Australian Catholic youth scene in the wake of the euphoria generated by the hundreds of thousands of young Catholics who flooded into Sydney for World Youth Day in 2008.
The target readership is principally young adult Catholics to whom the author feels close as a key organiser of World Youth Day and subsequently as Rector of the Sydney Archdiocesan Seminary of the Good Shepherd.
Those young people who experienced the deep rebirth of their faith in Sydney in 2008 will discover in this book information on which they can meditate to become better men and women in the service of Jesus Christ and His Church.
Jesus Christ, Yesterday, Today and Forever is readable and accessible and should be in every Catholic secondary school library. Indeed it could be used as one of the texts in senior level RE classes.
