Readers may have been given the impression it is a doctrine of the Catholic Church that there is a place or state called Limbo. John Young's letter (February AD2000) assumes there is such a doctrine.
It seems, rather, that the Church is agnostic about the fate of unbaptised infants, for the Catechism of the Catholic Church (1261) says: "As regards children who have died without baptism the Church can only entrust them to the mercy of God ... Indeed the great mercy of God ... and Jesus' tenderness towards children ... allow us to hope that there is a way of salvation for children who have died without Baptism."
Note "allow us to hope" - nothing more. Such a hope is not a doctrine.
