I refer to the letter by Mr Gordon Southern in the November AD2000. The pamphlet to which Mr Southern refers is derived from the Australian Catholic Bishops Social Justice Statement 2000, a full copy of which can be found on the Commission for Australian Catholic Women's website www.cacw.catholic.org.au.
The Commission for Australian Catholic Women is an initiative of the Australian Catholic Bishops Conference. The mandate of the Bishops for the Commission includes "acting as a focal point for the ongoing dialogue about the participation of women in the Church."
This is consistent with recent papal teachings summed in the words of Paul VI at the close of the Second Vatican Council: "The hour is coming, in fact has come, when the vocation of women is being acknowledged in its fullness, the hour in which women acquire in the world an influence, an effect and a power never hitherto achieved. That is why, at this moment when the human race is undergoing so deep a transformation, women imbued with a spirit of the Gospel can do so much to aid humanity in not falling."
