A Morning Poem

A Morning Poem

Bruce Dawe

Yes, it is the dawn that has come ... The sun tips with light the mountains of Angeli and East Griqualand. The great valley of the Umzimkulu is still in darkness, but the light will come there also. For it is the dawn that has come, as it has come for a thousand centuries, never failing.
- Alan Paton, Cry, the Beloved Country

Before sunrise the land wakes to its coming,
birds unstring their twittering in the trees,
a child stirs, an eyelid fluttering open,
the curtains twitch before a fingering breeze,
the sky foretells our Heavenly Father's message:

When doubt debates the morning, just look back
- let seeing how far you've come be then your comfort
the Comforter your companion on the track ...

Your dawn is coming, lit with resolution
and care for all that loving care demands;
our thoughts and prayers are with you as the sunlight
beckons you to new day with golden hands ...
